Indices

All numbers have a base and an index. The base is the bit we normally refer to as the number and the index tells us whether it is squared, cubed etc. Generally, we do not write the index because it is one and so the base is unaffected by it.

If the index is zero, no matter what the base number, the value is one. 7 to the power of 0 is 1. x to the power of 0 is 1. (school) to the power of 0 is 1.
